PHU QUOC IN 2026: WHAT TO EXPECT

Phu Quoc has transformed. The sleepy fishing island of a decade ago now has a 5-star JW Marriott, the world’s longest over-sea cable car, and a VinWonders theme park. But between the resorts, the original Phu Quoc survives — empty northern beaches, fishing villages, pepper farms, and sunsets that stop you mid-sentence.
This guide helps you find both versions.
THE BEACHES (NORTH TO SOUTH)
1. Bãi Dài (Long Beach North)
Location: Northwest coast, near Vinpearl
Vibe: Quiet, undeveloped, local
Facilities: Basic beach shacks, 50,000 VND sunbeds
The stretch north of the airport remains Phu Quoc’s secret. Powdery sand, gentle waves, almost no one around on weekdays. Seafood shacks serve whatever the morning catch was. This is the Phu Quoc that existed before the hotels came.
Best for: Escaping crowds, families, swimming
2. Sao Beach (Bãi Sao)
Location: Southeast coast
Vibe: Postcard-perfect, increasingly crowded
Facilities: Beach clubs, restaurants, water sports
The famous one. White sand so fine it squeaks, turquoise water so clear you can photograph your toes underwater. Instagram discovered it years ago, and the beach clubs followed.
Arrive before 9 AM to have it mostly to yourself. By noon, the tour buses arrive.
Entry: Free (but parking is 10,000 VND)
Sunbed + umbrella: 100,000–200,000 VND
3. Ông Lang Beach
Location: Northwest coast
Vibe: Mid-range resorts, sunset views
Facilities: Beach bars, restaurants, massage huts
The sweet spot between developed and peaceful. Small resorts and guesthouses line the coast. The sand is golden (not white like Sao), and the sunsets are spectacular.
Best for: Multi-day stays, sunset cocktails, boutique vibes
4. Bãi Trường (Long Beach South)
Location: Southwest coast, Duong Dong area
Vibe: Tourist hub, convenient, busy
Facilities: Everything
The main tourist beach. 20km of sand lined with resorts, from backpacker hostels to the InterContinental. It’s not the prettiest beach, but it’s the most convenient — walking distance from Duong Dong town, the night market, and most restaurants.
Best for: First-timers, convenience, nightlife proximity
DINH CAU NIGHT MARKET: THE STRATEGY
The Phu Quoc Night Market is the island’s main event. Every evening from 5 PM, the waterfront near Dinh Cau Temple transforms into a seafood paradise.
HOW IT WORKS
-
Choose your seafood. Walk the stalls. The vendors display the day’s catch on ice — lobster, crab, prawns, clams, squid, fish. Prices are per kg and negotiable.
-
Agree on price AND preparation. Steamed? Grilled? Garlic butter? Tamarind sauce? Get it clear before they cook.
-
Find a seat. The vendors share communal seating areas. You don’t have to eat standing up.
-
Pay after eating. They’ll bring the bill. Check it against what you agreed.

SCAM PREVENTION

- Fixed-price restaurants exist. If haggling stresses you, go to Ocean Queen or Xin Chao — menu prices, no negotiation.
SUNSET: THE BEST SPOTS
Phu Quoc’s west coast delivers Vietnam’s finest sunsets. Here’s where to watch:
The Rock Island Club — End of a dirt road past Ông Lang
Vibe: Bohemian, hammocks, live music
Drinks: 80,000–150,000 VND
Built on actual rocks jutting into the sea. Hammocks, beanbags, reggae music, and the sun sinking directly into the water. Arrive by 4:30 PM to claim a good spot.
Sunset Sanato Beach Club — Bãi Trường (Long Beach)
Vibe: Upscale, sculpted, pool access
Entry: 200,000 VND (redeemable for food/drink)
Art installations in the water, infinity pool, cocktails that cost more than your dinner. It’s the “produced” sunset experience, but undeniably photogenic.
Dinh Cau Temple — Duong Dong waterfront
Vibe: Local, authentic, free
The small temple on the rocky outcrop is where locals come to watch the sun set. No frills, no entry fee, just the view. Follow the fishermen.
BEYOND BEACHES: WHAT ELSE TO DO
Hon Thom Cable Car
Price: 500,000 VND round trip ($20)
Duration: 25 minutes (8km over water)
The world’s longest over-sea cable car connects Phu Quoc to Hon Thom island. The views are genuinely spectacular — islands, fishing boats, open ocean. On the other side: Aquatopia water park and Sun World complex.
Worth it for the cable car ride alone, even if you skip the theme park.
Khu Tuong Pepper Farm
Entry: Free
Duration: 30 minutes
Phu Quoc pepper is famous. Learn the difference between black, white, and red pepper (same plant, different processing). Buy direct from the source — 150,000 VND for 500g vs 300,000 VND in tourist shops.
Phung Hung Fish Sauce Factory — 11 Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Duong Dong
Entry: Free
Tip: The smell is… intense. Prepare yourself.
Phu Quoc fish sauce is Vietnam’s most prized — the “Champagne of nước mắm.”
Snorkeling at An Thoi Islands
Half-day tour: 400,000–600,000 VND ($16–24)
Includes: Boat, snorkel gear, 2-3 island stops, lunch
The archipelago south of Phu Quoc has the clearest water and healthiest coral. Hon Thom (cable car island), Hon Mong Tay, and Hon Gam Ghi are the usual stops.
