DAY 1 — SUNRISE LAYERS, SALT IN THE AIR, AND SILENCE THAT RINGS
Wake up at 5:00 AM, not 6:30.
At dawn, you will smell cold salt and damp limestone, hear only the low engine hum and a few gulls cutting through the mist.
By 5:30 AM, stand on the top deck with a 70–200mm and compress the karst layers into dark, jagged silhouettes.
The air will feel wet on your cheeks, almost sticky, and the light will turn from steel gray to pale silver in minutes.
Shoot vertical frames too — the mist columns between islands look dramatic in portrait orientation.

Dinner Worth Photographing and Eating
Ask for chả mực Hạ Long with sticky rice and a side of fish sauce with sliced chili.
The first bite should be springy, sweet-savory, and fragrant with fried squid oil — not rubbery, not bland.
If available, add ngán nướng mỡ hành (grilled ark clam with scallion oil): smoky aroma, ocean sweetness, and that sizzling sound right off the grill.
CAMERA RULES SO YOU DON’T COME HOME ANGRY
Leave the heavy tripod unless you are on a very stable overnight cruise.
Most boats vibrate, and that tiny shake murders long exposures.
Shoot handheld, keep shutter speed honest, and increase ISO when needed — modern cameras can handle it better than your pride can.
Wipe your lens every 10–15 minutes because salt mist is sneaky.
If your images look low-contrast, check the glass first before blaming the weather.
