You land at Noi Bai at 9pm. Your cruise leaves Tuan Chau at 8am tomorrow. Somebody on a forum told you to take the seaplane.
That person is working off information that is no longer true. 🛬 Here is the honest 2026 version, cross-checked this month, from people who actually make this drive.
FIRST, THE THING NOBODY UPDATED 🚫
The Ha Long seaplane is gone. Not paused. Gone.
Hai Au Aviation ended its Ha Long Bay seaplane operations on 1 April 2026, closing out more than a decade of flying that route. The scenic hop used to run around 1,600,000 VND for Vietnamese passengers and 2,000,000 VND for foreign visitors, with private charters from Hanoi to Tuan Chau starting near 9,000,000 VND.
You will still find it listed on travel sites, cruise operator pages, and “updated 2026” guides. It is not bookable. If an agent offers to sell you one, walk away.
So that leaves the road. All of it leaves the road.
THE GEOGRAPHY YOU ACTUALLY NEED 🗺️
Noi Bai to the Ha Long waterfront is roughly 160–180 km depending on which way your driver goes.
Two routes exist. The expressway chain — Hanoi–Hai Phong linking to Ha Long–Hai Phong and then National Road 18 — runs about 160 km and takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The old road, National Road 5 into Road 18, is around 180 km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours, with the reliable bottleneck being the residential stretch through Hai Duong.
Everyone worth paying takes the expressway. Tolls are already inside your ticket price.
One nasty detail: the worst traffic on this route is not near Ha Long. It is the Ring Road 3 approach back into Noi Bai, which reliably eats an extra 30 to 60 minutes between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays. That matters more on the return leg than the arrival.
OPTION 1: AIRPORT LIMOUSINE, DIRECT 🚐
This is what most travellers should book, and almost nobody does, because the English-language internet keeps pointing at a shuttle bus with 2023 pricing.
Four operators currently run Quang Ninh to Noi Bai directly. Fares span 180,000 VND to 450,000 VND, roughly 7 to 17 USD, and the spread reflects real differences in vehicle.
Phu Binh runs 45-seat sleeper coaches at 180,000 VND, the cheapest on the route, with the biggest luggage bay — genuinely useful if you are hauling two large suitcases. Nhat Hong runs 9 to 16-seat limousines at 300,000 VND with a commitment to no roadside pickups, which is the single most underrated feature on this drive. Van Minh charges 400,000 VND on 45-seaters but includes free door-to-door pickup within Quang Ninh. Co To Ha Thanh is the premium end at 450,000 VND for a 9-seat VIP limousine.
Here is the catch, and it is a real one. Most of these run one departure per direction per day. Timings from Bai Chay skew early, 4am and 4:15am, with Nhat Hong running a 22:00 night service. The Noi Bai to Ha Long direction has thinner published schedules than the reverse.
Translation: if you are flying in, call ahead. Do not assume there is a van waiting.
OPTION 2: PRIVATE CAR OR TAXI 🚗
Expect 1,200,000 to 1,800,000 VND, about 46 to 68 USD, one way for the whole vehicle.
For a couple this is expensive. For four people with luggage arriving at 11pm, it is 300,000 to 450,000 VND a head and you are asleep in Bai Chay before 2am. Do the division before you dismiss it.
Book it before you fly. Arranging a car at the arrivals kerb after a long-haul flight is how people end up paying 2,500,000 VND and feeling clever about the negotiation.
Grab and Xanh SM will both quote this route in-app. The number they show is usually within range of the private transfer companies, sometimes better at off-peak hours. Xanh SM’s electric fleet is a quieter ride, which is not nothing at 1am.
Our honest take as locals: the price gap between a shared limousine and a private car is smaller than it looks once you count two or more people. The real luxury you are buying is not the leather seat. It is not waiting.
OPTION 3: VIA HANOI CITY (USUALLY A MISTAKE) 🕳️
The Hanoi-to-Ha Long limousine market is enormous — twelve operators, departures every 30 to 60 minutes from 3am to 9pm, fares from 220,000 to 300,000 VND. Ha Vy is the budget floor at 220,000 VND. Trung Thanh is the fastest at 2 hours to 2 hours 15. Cua Ong publicly commits to not raising prices during Tet or public holidays, which in this market is worth noticing.
It looks cheaper. It is not, once you count getting from Noi Bai into Hanoi first — airport bus 86, 7, 17 or 90, then a transfer, then a wait, then the pickup point that turns out to be a scooter ride from where you actually are.
Take this route only if you were staying a night in Hanoi anyway. Then it is excellent, and Phuc Xuyen or Hoang Phu will collect you from your Old Quarter hotel door for free.
THE ADDRESS THING NOBODY WARNED YOU ABOUT 📍
Since 1 July 2025, Vietnam restructured its local administration. Quang Ninh now has 54 commune-level units — 22 communes, 30 wards and 2 special zones.
Practical effect for you: “Ha Long City” is no longer an administrative address. Your hotel confirmation may say “Bai Chay Ward, Quang Ninh” where an older booking said “Bai Chay, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh.” Both point to the same beach. Google Maps, booking platforms and taxi apps are still catching up unevenly.
Do not panic-cancel a reservation because the address looks wrong. It is a paperwork change, not a relocation.
WHAT WE’D ACTUALLY BOOK 🎯
Landing before 6pm, travelling as a pair, on a budget — pre-book a shared limousine seat and confirm by phone the day before.
Landing after 9pm, or with a cruise check-in before 10am — private car, booked from home, driver holding a nameplate. Sleep matters more than 800,000 VND.
Four or more people — private car every time. The maths stops being close.
Flying out on an early international departure — Nhat Hong’s 22:00 service from Bai Chay gets you to Noi Bai around 1am to 2am. Grim, but it works, and the seats recline.
Get a data eSIM sorted before you land, not after. Calling a bus company to confirm a departure time is exactly the moment you do not want to be hunting for airport wifi
ONE LAST LOCAL NOTE 🌊
Peak season on this corridor runs May through August, plus the 30 April holiday and Ha Long Carnival. Book seats one to two days ahead in normal weeks, three to five days around Tet and long weekends. The 9-seat limousines sell out first because there are only nine of them.
September and October are the sweet spot. Same bay, softer light, fewer people, and hotel rates in Bai Chay come down noticeably.
